Aspect ratio in cinema has changed a lot over the years, and I was able to see how and why with the research I did
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_%28image%29
But from what I read and looked into, it seems that the most common is 1:85:1, and has been for some time now. I wanted to use the most common ratio as I wanted the reader to recognise why the book has those dimensions and relate it to cinema/film relatively quickly.
I could have chose one of the many aspect ratios used by Tarantino but he has used a variety in his films and also it may be the case that not everyone reading the book has seen a Tarantino film.
With the ratio chosen I had to work out how big I wanted my book. At first I thought maybe 50mm high would be ok, but after drawing it out full size it was clear that it was way too small. I then decided to double it so the book was 100m high, meaning that it would be 185mm wide. This seemed like a good size for a book that might be a coffee table book or a fun book for film fans.
