Elephant

Elephant magazine is a quarterly magazine the showcases 'art culture' that started in 2009. The publication always has a very strong layout and is very design conscious, using contemporary graphic design to appeal to a specific audience. A common theme amongst Elephant's layout choice is a big, bold title to grab the attention of the reader.

This can be seen below in a couple of examples. The one on the left; 'MICRO', is slightly over the page, cutting off the top of the type. Without reading what this article is about, it is hard to say why it has been done and what informed decisions the designer made to come to this choice of layout, but the size itself contrasts against the word 'micro' and also makes the reader instantly read and notice it.

To the left is a double page spread with the title 'Art & the Internet' on one side, with a full bleed image on the other. The title is very nicely laid out with the focus being on 'ART' as it takes up almost half the width of the page and then underneath this reads '& the internet', which lines up nicely with the left and right side of the above type. To the left of the title is the body copy, a single column piece of writing that is perfectly aligned with the title's top and bottom edges, creating a very clean and purposful looking page. To add to the minimalist, clean cut layout the type is also justified so that all lines of type end at the same point, creating a clean lines throughout.

Kinfolk Magazine

Kinfolk magazine focuses on lifestyle and travel and aims to appeal to 'young creative professionals'. The choice in layout is similar to that of Elephant's but more minimal. Like Elephant there is a lot of white space on the pages and the spreads of the publication, instantly making it seem 'modern'. This is done by not using a lot of type and keeping the type to tight, justified columns; rather than bulky paragraphs. Where it differs from Elephant is in the titles. Kinfolk doesn't have the loud titles that shout from the page, rather small titles that sit above the body copy that quietly informs the reader what the piece is about. This has been done because the whole idea of Kinfolk is being outdoors, being with nature and spending time with family and friends and the small type and light colours reflect this peacefulness they talk about.

The images vary from small boxes to full bleed. The full bleed images are more impactful than the smaller alternative but still not too bold and 'in your face'. The smaller images that sit alone in the centre of the page create a nice amount of white space which keeps up with their 'young creative' audience, especially those who appreciate minimalism.

Cereal Magazine

Cereal Magazine is another publication dedicated to lifestyle and travel. Like Kinfolk, the layout is extremely minimal and strictly keeps to its grid. Unlike Kinfolk the images never go full bleed, instead leaving an even white border around the edge of the photograph.
