In this Forbes article, Bobby Owsinski talks about how Tidal exclusives such as Kanye West's 'The Life of Pablo' and Beyonce's 'Lemonade' are encouraging music fans to resort to music piracy in order to get the latest albums.
According to Forbes, Tidal has now moved up the Apple iTunes chart to number three, ahead of both Spotify and Pandora thanks to the two heavily anticipated albums being exclusively available on the platform. But before these albums were released Tidal had gone through a tough time getting new customers to sign up to their service; this could be down to a number of things. Many people are already paying for a subscription service such as Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora or one of the many other platforms, so persuading these people to stop using the one they're familiar with to jump ship to a brand new service is very hard and doesn't happen. A lot of people also dislike the interface of Tidal as it doesn't flow as well as Spotify does, it has undergone a number of slight redesigns since its launch.
Forbes states that The Life of Pablo was pirated over 500,00 times on the day of its release, and puts this down to people not wanting to sign up to Tidal for just one album and therefore pirating it instead.
At the time the article was written, Beyonce's 'Lemonade' had just been released to Tidal and was top of the charts on both KickassTorrents and ThePirateBay, the two leading torrent sites.
