OUGD404 Studio Brief 2 | Design Decisions

Reservoir Dogs Page:

Didn’t want too much given away because the nature of the film is quite mysterious:

No names
Don’t see the heist
Don’t know who’s the cop

That’s why on the left side of the page I kept it pretty minimal with he quote. I feel this quote portrays the character’s attitudes pretty well. The layout of it also links to how film credits are often
laid out.

Pulp Fiction Page

This spread has the longest quote and most type on it. I chose this quote and these characters to be featured as for me and many others i spoke to, these had the most interesting story and memorable. As for the quote, it’s just a really good quote. I highlighted the word ‘SHIT’ in the red because as well as violence Tarantino is known to have a lot of profanity in his films.

Jackie Brown Page

I’ve never actually seen Jackie Brown so it was pretty hard to choose and judge what to put on the spread. But I didn’t write the content for the films I had seen so I was too bothered about not writing it for this film so like the other spreads, I got the synopsis off the internet. As for the pictures, I chose the one of Samuel L. Jackson and Robert de Niro as out of the available images it seemed to have the best vibe and look to it. I’ve never seen the film but from this image I kind of think I know what characters are like, just from their expressions and the shot. I think this is good as not everyone reading the book will have seen all these films.

Kill Bill Pages

I decided to have the double page ‘KILL BILL’ spread in the iconic yellow to break the book up a bit. I felt Kill Bill could be little bit different from the rest of the films featured in the book as its the only sequel film.

For the individual film spreads I made them symmetrical.

“Violence is one of the most fun things to watch” Page

I wanted to include this page because Tarantino is often criticised for the violence in his movies and how violence in films could be linked to real life violence. Tarantino isn’t a fan of this criticism as shown in many interviews as he feels it’s untrue; films are films - real life separate. I agree with this, I think anyone watching a Tarantino film is old enough to know the consequences of violence in real life. That’s why I chose the quote “Violence is one of the most fun things to watch” - I set it out like I did because I wanted the emphasis on watch (meaning in films it’s fine, not in real life) , which is why I placed it over the eyes of a character.

Inglorious Basterds

This is a pretty simple spread but the main feature is the set of images. The inspiration for this is a roll of film, and I think it looks pretty nice. I then made one of the images have a red tone to it to fit it with the aesthetic of the rest of the book.

Awards and Earnings Page

I set the awards type out like a film’s end credits are often set out.
