I did a lot of variations of how the illustration could work.
As I said the restrictions are that the song name or title can't be on the front of the sleeve, so I thought maybe adding lyrics to it might help the reader make the link between the artwork and the song.
I was just playing around with colour on these by altering the blending options on shapes. It's hard to explain but in my mind the stop/start of the (especially the bottom one) rectangles reminds me of the Sledgehammer video with the stop motion feel to it.
Here I was using the blue/pink colours to represent the man and woman and the sexuality of the song. I think the bottom one works the best out of all of them because it fits with the gooeyness of the illustration and the theme behind it.
I kept with the blue and pink theme here but I added in the gender symbols to see what it would look like. I didn't think it looked too bad but I asked a couple of friends and they thought it made the concept a bit too obvious, which I do understand so I thought I'd stay away from this.
I then replaced the gender symbols with shapes of a a sledgehammer but still pointing in the same direction. I didn't like how this looked at all as I thought they looked out of place and just even more obvious than the previously tried gender symbols. I still tried it with all the variations to make sure there wasn't one case where I did like how it looked. But I did think it looked better when I lowered the opacity.
