OUGD406 Studio Brief 1 | Music Artwork Designers Research

My first bit of research for this brief is to look at music artwork designers and the work they have produced. This is helpful for me as it gives me an idea on how professionals and other creative people in general think and hopefully I will be able to see the design process behind the design. This is something I will need to look into deeply; not to just make something that looks good, but also has meaning. There is no point in creating a nice looking cover, but when it comes to it people don't know what song it is for. This is why I looked into the lyrics of the songs and analysed them, to try and figure out what the artist was saying and what message they wanted to put across.

The artists I looked in

Peter Saville

From what I've seen of Saville's work where he shows all of his work at http://www.petersaville.info/sleeves/, it doesn't seem to me that he has a 'style', his work varies from illustration to photography, which I really like.

Jamie Reid

These are pieces that Reid did for the Sex Pistols. The bottom piece has been described by Sean O'Hagan from The Observer as "the single most iconic image of the punk era". I really like his work. The mixture of photography and digital and collage imagery really works for an eye-catching piece of design

Annie Leibovitz

Storm Thorgeson

I really like Thorgeson's work. It's very abstract and interesting to look at and kind of makes the viewer wonder what's going on as the situations are very strange. My favourite piece of his is the Rival Sons album cover. As a Rival Sons fan it was great to find out that Thorgeson designed it.

I also looked into Fred Deakin's and MArk Farrow's work.
