Secret 7 Evaluation
Doing Secret 7 again this year was a lot of fun for me. I enjoyed a lot in first year as I was able to combine two of my favourite hobbies and interest into a university project; music and design. Before starting the project, I wanted to use Secret 7 as practice for producing quality, meaningful designs in a limited amount of time. Rather than treating these as very deep, very large briefs, I wanted to start and finish quickly without compromising my designs.
As I said, I do enjoy working on Secret 7 as I like music and design and I feel I used this to my advantage as I am proud of the work I produced. The first cover I designed was for Tame Impala’s ‘The Less I Know the Better’. When starting designing I purposely didn’t go looking at loads and loads of different album covers for ‘inspiration’ as I thought this might cloud my vision for my own designs. I decided to just listen to the song and the lyrics and design from there. After I came up with a brief concept I started designing, I then took this to a crit with both level five and six students where I gathered some helpful feedback.
The feedback I got helped me because I was able to get opinions from those who are completely new to my concept and my thought process. This has proven to be helpful in other projects also and is something I always appreciate when I do go to a crit as I am normally apprehensive about sharing my work.
The second cover I designed was for Chvrche’s ‘Clearest Blue’. I took the concept for the song and applied it to my design. I feel like this cover was not as strong as the other although I used the same method when coming up with the design for both. Visually, the ‘Clearest Blue’ cover doesn’t look as good but at the time when I was designing it I couldn’t tell as I was wrapped up in the concept more than the aesthetics; this is something I will hopefully recognise sooner in future projects.
Overall I think Secret 7 definitely proved helpful for me and did teach me how to design quickly and efficiently while also producing a good piece of work.
