OUGD503 Studio Brief 1 | Secret 7 Feedback & Response & Development [Clearest Blue]

In today's crit I presented my work and idea for Chvrche's 'Clearest Blue' cover for Secret 7. I explained my concept and showed my designs and got some really great feedback on what works well and what doesn't work so well. Here are the points that were made

- Very abstract, not sure how clear the message is.

- The colour in the background works really well in contrast with the 'eye' colour.

- Maybe add a texture to the background?

- The blue isn't blue enough. (Some people disagreed)

This feedback proved quite useful in regards to development because it gave me the chance to try some things that I didn't think of, whether the ideas be good or bad.

Somebody said that my design may be too abstract, but this is exactly how I wanted the design to be perceived. I said from the start I wanted to make this cover to mean something through basic shapes and colour, and I feel I have accomplished this with my current design. It may be very abstract, but there is a reason for it and once the viewer reads about it, gets told about it or figures it out themselves, it loses it's mystery and is hopefully just a good piece of design.

Not everybody felt the same on this issue, most people agreed with my thoughts and liked how abstract it is. When they first see it they are intrigued and it looks very nice, but once the meaning becomes clear it all makes sense. This reflects how the girl in the song feels about her relationship.

With the background, I did play around with different colours, hues and gradients but someone suggested maybe adding a texture because the colours apparently reminded them of 'rust'. I took this on board and experimented with adding a rust texture.

I agree that the blue in the centre eye isn't a very stark, bright blue but that's because I don't think it should be. I don't want the viewer to look at the cover, see blue, and think; 'that's a bright blue because of the name of the song'.

The centre eye is a clear blue, with a gradient. This fits the overall aesthetic of the cover a lot better and is a little bit more subtle than just having a bright, sky blue circle in the middle of the design.
